Plantain Stem Raita/ Banana Stem Raita/ Arati Doota Perugu Pacchadi / A SuperFood Raita

Hello all 🙋! I hope you all are keeping well. Here's another quick and healthy recipe for you using the superfood, banana stem! Try to include banana stem at least once a week for it is beneficial to our health. It is said that drinking banana stem juice helps in treating kidney stones! Check out the  advantages here :

To Make This Recipe You'll Need :

Banana stem - 180g (after cleaning and chopped)

Whisked curd - 200g + 1 Tablespoon

Water - As needed

Oil - 1 Tablespoon

Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon

Urad dal - 1/2 teaspoon

Ginger - 1/2 teaspoon (chopped)

Green chili - 1 (chopped)

Dried red chilli - 1

Salt - to taste

Cumin seeds/ jeera - 1/2 teaspoon

Curry leaves - a few

Coriander - few sprigs

Method :

1. Add 1 Tablespoon of curd and add enough water to make the buttermilk.

2. Now prepare the banana stem. It has 2 layers. Slit the outer part which is hard and porous. Discard it and use the inner shiny hard portion.

3. Cut into roundels while discarding the fibres sticking to your fingers and knife. Now chop into cubes and transfer them to the prepared buttermilk to prevent discolouration.

4. Rub thoroughly in the buttermilk to remove any fibres present. Alternatively, you could run wooden skewers into the bowl in a circular motion and the fibres will stick to the skewers.

5. Now, take a cooking pot. Add oil, once the oil is hot, add mustard seeds, urad dal, chopped ginger, chopped green chilli, dried red chilli, cumin seeds, curry leaves and fry until the urad dal turns golden and the aroma starts to arise. (At this point reserve some to add on top later if you wish)

6. Now, drain the banana stem, squeeze out the buttermilk and add to the cookpot.

7. Add salt and mix well. Cook until done. The banana stem will shrink in its size indicating it's done.

8. Let it cool down and add to the whisked curd. Check for salt, add if necessary. Add chopped coriander. Top it with reserved tadka.

9. Serve.
